I do love history, it informs my Biblical Interpretation, my Politics, and even my leadership of the Church. I do not know when I became a History buff, but it was early.
I memorized the Gettysburg Addressin first grade, and Lincoln was my hero, mostly because we were both tall. I remember asking my mother who were the good guys in the Civil War. Needless to say, there was no answer. There are two histories of every history, and I have been more and more convinced that our public schools do not teach us how to investigate.
A friend just gave me a book to read, Whittaker Chambers' Witness. I have never heard of him or the Alger Hiss case. Why? Because it suggests that our country had been significantly shaped by Communism from the 1920's to the 1950's. Of course, most of what we get now are stories of Blacklisting and McCarthyism, but now that KGB Documents have been revealed. It seems that Chambers was right and there were many who were part of the espionage in the major parts of our political and social history of those times.
Why does this book intrigue me? With our current economic crises, some are calling for another New Deal or a global New Deal. How much did folks like Chambers and Hiss as Communists contribute to the original New Deal? Which history do I believe concerning the New Deal? I grew up thinking that FDR was God's gift to America, but the more I read the more I see a different side to him. Which one is true? I do not know, but I will let you know what I find in my reading.
